The global identity for financial transactions. Get your 20-digit Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) to participate in international and high-value domestic financial markets.

The 20-digit unique code for every legal entity globally. Ensure your business can process high-value transactions and comply with RBI mandates.

The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a 20-character, alpha-numeric code based on the ISO 17442 standard. It was developed by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) following the 2008 global financial crisis to improve transparency and risk management in financial markets. It uniquely identifies every legal entity that is a party to financial transactions globally.

In India, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made LEI mandatory in a phased manner for all participants in the Over-the-Counter (OTC) markets for Interest Rate, Currency, and Credit derivatives. It is also required for entities having a certain aggregate credit exposure to banks and for large-value transactions in centralized payment systems like NEFT and RTGS.

QuickTaxperts provides a specialized service for LEI registration through the Legal Entity Identifier India Ltd (LEIL), a subsidiary of CCIL. We help you prepare the technical documents, clarify the entity structure, and manage the annual renewal cycle.

Frequently asked questions

These quick answers cover common planning questions before you request a checklist or quote.

  • What is an LEI Code?: LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) is a 20-digit alpha-numeric code that serves as a universal identifier for legal entities participating in financial transactions.
  • Who issued the LEI in India?: In India, LEIs are issued by Legal Entity Identifier India Ltd (LEIL), which is an RBI-recognized Local Operating Unit (LOU).
  • Is LEI mandatory for all companies?: No, but it is mandatory for entities with bank exposure above ₹5 Crores, and for any entity involved in RTGS/NEFT transactions above ₹50 Crores.
  • What is the validity of an LEI?: An LEI code is valid for exactly one year from the date of issuance. It must be renewed annually to remain active in the global database.
  • What happens if I don't renew my LEI?: If not renewed, the status of your LEI will change to 'Lapsed'. Banks may stop processing your international payments or high-value RTGS/NEFT transactions.
  • What are the 20 digits in the LEI?: The first 4 digits identify the LOU (e.g., 3358 for India), digits 5-18 are the unique entity ID, and the last 2 digits are check digits.
